New Zealand artist-Don Binney

I have chosen to focus on the New Zealand artist Don Binney and his work.

Don Binney was born in Auckland in 1940. He is best known for his paintings of birds. He works in oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink and carbon pencil. Many of his works depict the west coast of Auckland and Northland, containing sea, sky, native birds, still life and occasionally, figures.

Don Binney’s paintings are easily recognised because of the subject matter of birds and also because of the gorgeous, celebratory colours. Although he has also painted landscapes including islands, beaches and headlands, even the landscapes mostly include some sort of bird form. Only some of Don Binney’s art is black and white. He prefers to be true to the natural colours of the environment that he is painting.

The two paintings portrayed here have their similarities and differences.

One of them focuses on the bird solely, while still portraying it’s environmental setting in the background. The other one is mainly focussing on the landscape and is one of the few paintings that does not have some sort of bird form.

However, both paintings are natural, focussing on the environment.
